I applied to the European Solidarity Corps– Volunteer in Humanitarian Aid at age 34, after having missed out on volunteering opportunities within Europe.
I was looking for the right opportunity that combines my role as a trainer and career counsellor.
I applied and got selected to work on the Youth Empowerment project of Volunteers Initiative Nepal (ViN).
I spent five months in a small village of Eastern Nepal in the Everest region.
This experience helped me learn about Nepali culture, grow me as a trainer, introduced me to a couple dozen wonderful volunteers!
Take a break from your "normal" life for a few weeks (or months!) to explore a different culture.
Experience rural Nepal: eat dal bhat and momos, walk kilometers up and downhill every day, experience mountain climate, join religious and local celebrations.
Live with local families and get a peek into their everyday life.
Share your skills, knowledge, and your passion with people who are keen to learn! Support ViN or other local NGOs.
Leave your comfort zone far behind, reflect on your priorities in life and see where it takes you.
I'm here to discuss and exchange about volunteering in general or in particular with ViN.
Why is volunteering important? How can we make sure we do more good than harm?
How to select the country, organisation and topic?
What sort of expenses can you calculate with?
How can you prepare yourself emotionally for the journey?
What were the best moments? What are the biggest challenges?
What is the process with European Solidarity Corps?
How can you work with ViN, not only through European Solidarity Corps?
How can you support youth empowerment in Okhaldhunga, Nepal?
Drop me an email with your questions and I will be glad to exchange!
I spent five months in rural Nepal on Volunteer Initiative Nepal's Youth Empowerment project. With my colleagues, we surveyed 100+ young people and delivered a few dozen workshops. I'm grateful for the experience, learning and generosity I received from my fellow volunteers and the local community. I'd go again!
What did I do for five months in the Okhaldhunga region? Why did I go at age 35? And what was my experience of 'impact'?

Check out an example of how our workshops could support the local community. And a testament to my drawing skills on the board!
